Last September, during the keynote dedicated to the iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, the new Apple Watch Series 7 was presented. A watch that builds on the achievements of all previous Apple Watches, while bringing its share of new features. The most important of these novelties is obviously material: a new design and a new screen. This is the first time since Watch Series 6 that Apple has changed the design of its connected watch.

Of course, that's not all. The platform has changed. The battery has been improved. The protection index has been reinforced. watch OS has been updated with new health-related services. In short, the Watch is improving. But one element has been completely overlooked by Apple: biometric sensors. They don't change. Faced with competition, especially Korean, which is innovating in the field, this is obviously not good news.

Hence several questions. Is the Watch Series 7 better than the Watch Series 6? Do screen changes change usage? Can the new battery offer the same autonomy despite the integration of this new OLED panel? Is the absence of new biometric sensors a real problem? These are questions that we will answer throughout this test.

For information, the version of the Apple Watch that we received is the Series 7 Aluminum. The case size is 45mm. And the connectivity is GPS + Cellular. We have activated the Multi-SIM option associated with the mobile plan installed on the iPhone 13 Pro Max that we use in writing. This is an option that costs 5 euros per month and allows access to all the services of the watch independently. Go to the connectivity part of the test to find out more.

DATE AND AVAILABILITY:

The price of the Apple Watch has not changed with version 7. The latter therefore incorporates the prices and options of the previous one. Note that there is no GPS-only version with the steel and titanium versions of the Watch Series 7.

The Apple Watch is first and foremost a case. Unlike other watches, which are systematically sold with a standard strap (it is then up to you to buy others), you have the choice of the strap you will wear when ordering. For the design, we will therefore focus, like the Watch Series 6 and the Watch SE last year, on the case.

SCREEN:

Why is Apple Watch Series 7 bigger than Series 6? Because Apple has integrated a new screen. Simply. The diagonal is 7% larger on average, going from 1.57 and 1.78 inches to 1.69 and 1.9 inches, respectively. This figure seems anecdotal, and yet, it changes a lot of things. Whether in terms of information visibility, or in terms of handling the operating system and applications.

BIOMETRIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL SENSORS:

Last year, Apple brought new environmental and biometric sensors to the Watch Series 6. The altimeter for example, extremely practical for outdoor sports, such as cycling, hiking or sliding sports. And the oximeter for calculating the oxygen level in the blood (Sp02 and VO2max). They come in addition to the ECG, heart rate monitor, accelerometer, barometer, integrated GPS (even in the version without LTE), microphone (to talk to Siri or make a call) and ambient light sensor ( which reduces or increases the ambient light).
